Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) for skin: Stimulating, Healing, Restoring

As more and more medical research comes out about the benefits of LLLT for our skin, it just gets more and more exciting.  I will attempt to keep up with these research papers and make the information available as soon as we can.

LLLT, phototherapy or photobiomodulation (PBM) refers to the use of red and near-infrared wavelengths of light to positively alter biological activity in our skin and tissues below the skin.  The main medical applications of LLLT are reducing pain and inflammation, augmenting tissue repair and promoting regeneration of different tissues and nerves.  Additionally, this therapy helps prevent tissue damage in situations where it is likely to occur, such as exposure to ultraviolet radiation (the sun).

Without getting too technical, let’s see how this LLLT works in a medical sense.  Although our skin is the organ that is naturally exposed to light more than any other organ, it still responds well to red and near-infrared wavelengths.  The photons of light are absorbed by mitochondrial chromophores in skin cells.  Consequently, electron transport, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production and nitric oxide release increase substantially.  This also causes increased blood flow, reactive oxygen species increase and diverse signaling pathways get activated.  Stem cells can be activated allowing increased tissue repair and healing.

To put it in simple terms that are easier to understand, LLLT gets our skin really excited in terms of energy production, tissue healing and increased skin tone.

In dermatology, LLLT has beneficial effects on wrinkles, acne scars and healing of burns.  LLLT can reduce ultraviolet (UV) damage both as a treatment and as a prophylaxis (kind of like sunscreen).  Inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis and acne can also benefit.  The non-invasive nature and almost complete absence of possible side-effects encourages more and more dermatologic uses.

The most important factor in the effectiveness of LLLT is the very accurate and specific wavelength of light that must be produced to have these benefits.  The Contour Light machine we have in our clinic is the most powerful and specific light available today.  Producing red and near-infrared light in wavelengths of both 635 nm. and 880 nm., which have been shown to be the most beneficial wavelengths of light.  Our clinic has the only Contour Light machine in the state of Idaho and has the exclusive right to the use of this technology.

Keep watching for more research and information on this exciting form of therapy.  Call our office to schedule your special introductory session with our Contour Light.  Whether you are interested in body contouring with fat loss, wrinkle reduction or reducing joint pain and inflammation – the Contour Light offers the most powerful, non-invasive sessions possible.
